Roller Compacted Concrete – Pavamax™

Sofina Foods Inc. is a privately owned, Canadian company that is dedicated to providing great tasting, high quality, food products for retail and food service industries. The Sofina Foods Inc. Burlington processing facility operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Its existing yard was made up of a combination of concrete and granular areas and serviced very heavy truck traffic.
When looking into options to upgrade two sections of its yard, this company chose Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) over traditional concrete. This decision was made because RCC is more economical and provides an accelerated construction schedule, which would minimize disruption to existing operations.

Construction of the RCC pavement was completed over two weekends. Site preparation was completed on the first weekend, and placement of the RCC took place on the Friday night and Saturday morning of the following, long weekend. The pavement was put into service on Tuesday morning. Sofina Foods Inc. is extremely happy with the results, is considering more applications of RCC, and would recommend this product for other projects of a similar nature.

Roller Compacted Concrete – Pavamax™

Liberty Tire Recycling Canada Ltd. is one of the largest tire recycling companies in North America. The recycled rubber produced by Liberty Tire is used as crumb rubber and industrial feedstock for manufacturers such as tire-derived fuel, or as rubber mulch for applications such as landscaping, athletic fields, and playgrounds.

Liberty Tire’s Brantford facility operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Its existing yard was composed of asphalt and was in very poor condition, due to extremely heavy truck traffic. As such, Liberty Tire Recycling Canada Ltd. was looking for a new pavement solution that could stand up to extreme traffic with minimal disruption to its existing operations during construction.

Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) was a very attractive option from both a cost and performance standpoint when compared to conventional asphalt pavement. Liberty Tire decided to use RCC because of its extended life expectancy, its reduced maintenance needs, and its cost-effective nature resulting from reduced excavation requirements.

Construction of the RCC pavement was completed in several phases to minimize disruption, as each phase could be put into service within 3 days of completion. Liberty Tire is extremely happy with the performance of the Roller Compacted Concrete and is especially impressed that it does not rut, shove or tear from tight turns. Not to mention, it is not affected by heat or fluid spills.

Roller Compacted Concrete – Pavamax™

Tigercat Industries is a Canadian company specializing in the design and manufacture of premium quality, forestry equipment, and specialized off-road, industrial machinery. For the expansion of its state-of-the-art production facility in Paris, Ontario. Tigercat Industries was looking for a very durable surface for its yard that could stand up to harsh use.

The vehicles that Tigercat manufactures have extremely substantial steel tracks, which create challenges for yard maintenance. Moreover, the existing condition of the yard made it difficult to keep newly produced equipment clean.

After Tigercat was introduced to the benefits of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) pavement, the company wanted to test its most substantial equipment on one of KING’s test pads. Tigercat personnel tried their hardest to damage the pavement and barely scratched the surface! As a result, Tigercat Industries was very impressed with the RCC and decided to use the product.

Pavamax™ HP, with the addition of silica fume, was the RCC product selected, because of its excellent strength and abrasion-resistant properties. The construction of the RCC pavement was completed in 5 days and was put into service within 3 days after completion. Tigercat was so pleased with the product that its decision-makers commissioned KING for the substantial, additional phase of work conducted in the yard in Fall 2015.

Roller Compacted Concrete – Pavamax™

King Packaged Materials Company produces professional-grade, easy-to-use products, for do-it-yourself and contractor-based home improvement projects, as merchandised in Canada’s leading home improvement retailers. King Packaged Materials Company is also a leading provider of shotcrete, concrete, grout, repair mortar, and other cementitious products to North American and International mining and construction markets.

For the state-of-the-art expansion of its production and shipping facility in Paris, Ontario, its decision-makers wanted a durable pavement. The existing yard was asphalt and highly fatigued from heavy equipment and truck traffic.

King Packaged Materials Company had previous experience with Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) from previously expanding its plant facility in Boisbriand, Quebec. Company officials were impressed with the longer life expectancy, reduced maintenance, and lower overall life cycle cost associated with RCC.

Traditional Pavamax™, without the addition of silica fume, was selected because extreme abrasion was not a concern with the majority of traffic in the yard coming from wheel-loading. Construction of the RCC pavement was completed in 5 days and put in service within 3 days of completion, with minimal interruption to existing operations. King Packaged Materials Company would recommend it for other trucking facilities.

Roller Compacted Concrete – Pavamax™ HP

Liebherr Canada is a manufacturer of world-class, heavy, off-road, mobile equipment and cranes. When evaluating pavements for its expansion in Burlington, Ontario, company personnel knew they wanted a rigid concrete pavement to stand up to the heavy loading and steel tracked equipment frequenting the facility.

Traditional wet-cast concrete was an option but Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) was chosen because it was more economical and allowed for a quicker construction schedule, therefore minimizing disruption of existing operations.

Pavamax™ HP, with the addition of silica fume, was the RCC product selected, because of its excellent strength and abrasion-resistant properties. Construction of the RCC pavement was completed in 5 days and put in service within 3 days of completion.
