New Street and Drury Lane Area, Burlington, Ontario

New Street and Drury Lane Area – Contract No. CW 16-04 The Corporation of the City of Burlington

Project Description (General)
Traffic control, layout, removals, clear and grubbing; roadworks: storm sewers, sanitary sewers, water mains, excavation, granulars, concrete curbs & decorative sidewalks, asphalt paving, line markings. electrical: illumination, traffic signals; landscaping: streetscape site furnishings, decorative markings.

Key Challenges and Solutions
The construction had many challenges. It is a major artery which feeds the downtown core, and is extremely busy with vehicle, bus, cyclist, and pedestrian traffic. We committed a large workforce to the City of Burlington and the Region of Halton. This enables us to complete the first stage of this contract +/- one month early, so that buses and the traveling public could use the road again. We then proceeded to perform the remainder of the watermain and roadwork ahead of schedule.

Unique Aspects Of This Project
The traffic volumes on this street were extremely heavy, and in addition, it is the busiest bus route in the City of Burlington. This two-year project was completed in the summer of 2017. This made it extremely difficult to move the project forward. The City was pleased with the performance of the project, so KING was awarded an extra to the contract for 2018. Work will involve additional milling and paving from Guelph Line to Walkers Line.
